Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
| What is WIC? WIC, which stands for Women, Infants, and Children, is a federal program that provides food to low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, and infants and children until the age of five. The program provides nutrition education, supplemental foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals to health care. The United States Department of Agriculture funds the WIC Program. |

What food is available through WIC?
Nutritious foods rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. These are key nutrients commonly missing in the diets of the WIC target population. Participants exchange WIC food vouchers at authorized retail grocery stores and pharmacies. Eligible food includes:

What other services does WIC provide?
Nutrition education is an important part of WIC and is available to all adult WIC participants, and whenever possible, to child participants and to other family members. Information is provided on:
- infant feeding
- special diets
- nutrition for healthy pregnancy
- food buying
- child growth and development
- breastfeeding information and support
- pregnant women
- breastfeeding women who have had a baby in the last 12 months
- women who have had a baby or a miscarriage in the last 6 months
- infants
- children up to 5 years
In addition, WIC Income Eligibility Guidelines must be met.

You must also have a health risk factor based on:
- height and weight
- blood test for low iron
- health history
- diet history
What happens at a WIC visit?
- Your height, weight, and a blood test for low iron will be done if needed.
- A nutritionist will ask questions about your health and your diet.
- A nutritionist will review the above information to see if you are eligible for WIC.
- Any nutrition problems or questions you have will be discussed.
- If eligible, you will be given "checks" to take to the store to get your food.
Note: You need to bring your child's immunization (shot) record to all appointments.

Enroll in WIC
All new appointments should be made by calling the WIC office on the day you wish to come in. We accept calls Monday - Thursday starting at 8:00 am.
To schedule your next WIC appointment, please check your vouchers to see when you will need to come in. Try to schedule your WIC appointment about 1 week before your last vouchers run out.
When you call the health department at (828) 692-4223, please select the following options in this order:

Please stay on the line. DO NOT HANG UP.
You will need to bring in the following information to be certified:
- Individual being certified
- Social Security card and shot records
- Proof of identification: valid driver's license, SS card, school ID, Medicaid card, military ID, or birth certificate
- Proof of residence: recent water bill, electric, cable, gas, or telephone bill, current rental or mortgage agreement
- Proof of income: current Medicaid card, Work First eligibility or Food Stamp approval letter. If these do not apply, bring your last month paycheck stub or recent tax return for self-employment
- Bring WIC Folder (can be used as ID)

Breastfeeding Support Service
The Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly support breastfeeding. We encourage all women to breastfeed their infants by offering breastfeeding education and assistance. Assistance is provided by a board certified Lactation Consultant, breastfeeding peer counselors, and WIC nutritionists who are Certified Breastfeeding Educators. The peer counselors make hospital visits to breastfeeding mothers. They also are available at the WIC office and by phone to answer questions. Please contact the WIC office at (828) 694-6030 for more information. There is no charge for breastfeeding counseling services. Support groups for breastfeeding are available. Please call (828) 694-6030 for dates and times.

Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP)
Diabetes self-management classes are provided for pregnant women who have developed diabetes during pregnancy and are clients of the health department. Women learn how diabetes affects them during pregnancy and after delivery, risks for the baby, how to plan meals, check blood sugars, benefits of exercise, and much more. Conversation Maps, displays, models, and other hands-on tools are used to make class fun and to reinforce information.

KidFit
KidFit is a weight management program for children and teens ages 2-18 years of age. Individual nutrition counseling services are provided at the Henderson County Department of Public Health by a registered dietitian. Families are taught to make healthy choices through interactive lessons and encouraged to participate in daily physical activity. Please read the KidFit brochure. To participate in the program, contact your child's doctor, school nurse, or Amy McCall at (828) 694-6029 at the Henderson County Department of Public Health. We must receive a referral from your child's health care provider prior to starting the program. Referrals may be faxed to (828) 694-1600. Check with your insurance company for dietitian counseling coverage. The program is covered by Medicaid; discounted services are available by providing annual gross income and number of persons in the household. Our priority is to serve your child; no child will be denied services because of inability to pay.
