Henderson County Residents Urged to Receive the MMR Vaccine
Due to an outbreak of measles in the state, the Henderson County Department of Public Health is urging residents to receive the MMR vaccine if they have never been vaccinated for measles or have an incomplete series.
The vaccine is available at no cost at the health department’s immunization clinic located at 1200 Spartanburg Highway.
Immunization Clinic Hours are 8:00 – 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
More information about measles is available at http://epi.publichealth.nc.gov/cd/diseases/rubeola.html.
We work to protect the health of the public by providing investigation, surveillance, and prevention activities to control communicable diseases. Disease control services include immunizations, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases; HIV counseling, testing, and referral; tuberculosis testing and treatment; and general communicable disease monitoring.
Communicable Disease Investigations
We follow protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and the North Carolina Division of Public Health. Protocols for disease investigation and statistical data for North Carolina and Henderson County are available on the Division's website.
Fees & Insurance
Cash, check, and some insurance plans are accepted for payment of immunization fees. We also accept VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards or debit cards for payment.
The NC DPH Immunization Branch has changed the availability of certain vaccines. Children who qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program will continue to receive vaccines at no cost. Due to significant budget cuts to North Carolina’s vaccine program, we are no longer able to offer all recommended childhood vaccines and some adult vaccines at no cost. As a result, some families will be responsible for the cost of vaccines.
Questions: For questions about the cost of vaccines and the fee structure, please call the Immunization Clinic at (828) 694-6015. Contact Audrey Saltz for general communicable disease activities.
The Department of Public Health continues to make every effort to provide affordable vaccines for Henderson County residents.

Communicable Disease Reporting Procedures for Health Care Providers
With the rollout of the North Carolina Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NCEDSS), the NC Communicable Disease Manual has been revised with reporting forms, compatible with NCEDSS, which replace previous reporting cards and surveillance forms.
Use the Confidential Communicable Disease Report—Part 1 in place of the morbidity cards. Physicians or their designee are to complete the one page form and send by mail to the Henderson County Department of Public Health, Communicable Disease Control Section. The mailing address is printed on the Disease Report form.
Here is a link to all currently reportable diseases with the required reporting time, 24 hours or 7 days. The complete revised North Carolina Communicable Disease Manual is available on the General Communicable Disease Control website.
For additional information on communicable disease reporting, please contact the Communicable Disease Control office at (828) 694-6019.

You are never too old to protect yourself against communicable diseases. Immunity for many common childhood illnesses wanes as we get older. New vaccines have been developed to protect older adults from some of the consequences of those childhood illnesses. Contact your health care provider to determine if you are at risk for some of these diseases or conditions. Fees may apply with some of the vaccinations. Please check with the department at (828) 694-6015 for availability and current cost of adult vaccines. For a list of recommended vaccines, see Immunize North Carolina.

Foreign travel immunization services are available by appointment only. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated, and appointments less than 10 days prior to departure may not be available.
Call (828) 694-6126 to schedule your appointment. Leave a message on the phone line with your name, phone number, date of birth, travel destinations, and dates of travel. A Foreign Travel staff person will return your call to schedule an appointment. Appointments are limited to two days per week, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Foreign Travel Immunization Clinic Services are offered on a limited basis. For information on travel health, vaccines, and malaria prophylaxis recommendations, please view the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and the North Carolina Immunization Branch website. Most vaccinations must be administered at least 10 days prior to travel to be effective. For this reason, it is critical to consider travel health requirements at the time travel plans are confirmed.
Some vaccines must be special ordered and prepayment is required. We accept Visa/MasterCard/Discover cards or debit cards for payment of services as well as cash or check.
An office visit fee is charged for each foreign travel consultation. Vaccine charges are based on vaccine costs and administration fees. Every effort is made to keep fees reasonable, but prices are subject to change based on the cost of each vaccine. For current fees, you may call the Immunization Clinic at (828) 694-6015.
Sexually Transmitted Disease
The Department of Public Health identifies, treats, and reports sexually transmitted diseases. Services are confidential. Call 692-4223 to ask for an appointment.
Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is still a problem in the United States and North Carolina. In recent years, the CDC has noted a rise in the number of active TB cases.
Our health department offers TB skin tests through the immunization clinic. Cost is $10 for routine tests required for employment, but there is no charge if the client is symptomatic for TB or has been determined to be a contact with someone with active TB. For a client with a positive skin test, a Communicable Disease Nurse will offer counseling, chest X-rays, medical referrals, contact tracing and testing, and provide medication. Tuberculosis Control Services are provided at no cost to the client.
Tuberculosis skin tests are administered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. The client is required to return to the Immunization Clinic 72 hours after the skin test is placed to be evaluated by a nurse. Tuberculosis skin tests are most accurate at 72 hours after administration.
Additional information about tuberculosis is available from the CDC and the state's website. The North Carolina Tuberculosis Control Program's Policy Manual is available on the web for review for health care professionals and the general public.
